My futon measured 28 x 77 x 3.5 inches when first unrolled. The smell is strong, but it goes away. (Almost any new bed comes wrapped in plastic. You probably don't notice the smell when it's covered in bed sheets.)
Don't buy this and complain that it doesn't feel like a real mattress... it's not supposed to. It feels just like using a sleeping bag when camping outdoors. Use a tri-fold cushion under it if necessary. I also suggest using two pillows. Also, don't curl up on it- instead spread your weight out and relax.
